Welcome

Anyone on this account knows me from the Tolkien fandom, one way or another, I believe. But it is nice to be able to put everything in one post. Most of this journal will probably be non-fic things, because I like to write about what I see and do. It makes me a better writer and slows down my brain, I think. (Plus, if I could get into the habit of writing more frequently that would be excellent!) I hope you find something interesting here, and if you don't, that's okay, because this is mostly for me. You can find links to my other social media presences and any emerging or random projects that don't have their own heading under "Other Things" at the bottom of this post. Most posts are “access only” at this time.

I'm from the US and grew up in Appalachia. I'm 32 and in a PhD program in Human Development. My professional background is in child abuse and investigations. My fiancée likes to tell people that I'm getting my PhD in "Sad Kids." Applied memory research and trauma studies is probably the best way to describe my focus without bringing the dinner party to a screeching halt--my officially declared focus is "human rights, child memory, and traumatic stress". Other things I like or like learning about are nature, animals, history, archaeology, Fantastic Beasts, international politics, music, sociology, languages, theatre, good stories, anthropology, poetry, disaster, crime, war, and oddly niche areas of science. I am currently really into plant taxonomy, Bones (TV), and learning to build websites.

• August 2023 update (previous Sept 2022) : I am currently really into slimemolds and 1900-1950 history, particularly WWI and the interwar-era in Europe and elsewhere.

I read the Hobbit in 1998 and I have been in love with Tolkien's world ever since. I tend to have obsessive interests and so I have engaged with other fandoms, but I always come back to this one. I started writing fanfiction ages ago. The first copy of any fanfiction I saved was from my 10th birthday, I believe, and it was about Harry Potter, written in purple-inked cursive in my pre-movies Hermione journal. Like most of my work, it was unfinished. I started young. (I kid, most of my things are finished or in progress, but its been a long road to get there.) My favorite weird piece of fanfiction I still have to this day is two three-ring binders full of handwritten fanfiction from 7th and 8th grade--a LotR, HP, Young Wizards, and occasional Artemis Fowl crossover. It was horrific and I love it. (I also have about 20 floppy disks I saved writing on from ages 10 to 18, but I cannot open them--the money I would give to know what I wrote...)

Now, I only write Tolkien fanfiction (though I am dabbling in Bones fanfiction currently), mostly all connected to wood-elves or the Mirkwood fam one way or another, though I am branching out into Gondolin, Elrond et al, Nan Elmoth, and the Sons of Fëanor. I've been writing about Legolas for two decades now, though, which is absolutely mindboggling to realize. I started recording podfics in 2021 and love it, though I've had to take a break with the world starting up again. I'll podfic almost anything in the Tolkien fandom. I love fandom history but archive it in my head only. I'm very grateful for those who do that work for others to learn from! Finally, I've been sticking my feet into Tolkien scholarship recently, but I'm not sure how committed to it I am. I have very very mixed feelings. We shall see.

• August 2023 update: I am currently primarily active in the Fantastic Beasts fandom, though I still engage with Tolkien material. In my fic, I mostly write about wartime politics and relationships, and then Newt Scamander and autism. I do not support JK Rowling. I am queer and genderqueer and have worked on multiple concrete campaigns that actually changed policies for trans and queer folks. This is an autistic special interest that I have tried not to love but it is what it is.

All fics are listed in approximate chronological order of their occurrence "in-universe" unless otherwise noted. All fics are part of the same "universe" except for Sandbox fics. WIPs are marked with an asterisk, and abandoned fics are marked with two. If fics truly belong to more than one series, then they may be listed twice. Most fics were posted on FFN first. Enough Universe This series is ongoing and basically contains any and all stories about the Mirkwood family. (It is the same universe as all the rest, but I’ve divided them up to make it less overwhelming.) This one is called the “Enough Universe” because it mostly sprang out of the story “Enough” and grew forward and backward from there. Stories specifically in the "Enough" story arc and not just in the "world" are indicated. Featuring the Mirkwood Family, a few Silm cameos, and supporting cast.
